Drabble: The Next Great Adventure

I think the challenge for this was something like "peace above all earthly dignities. Here, at the end of everything, I have a still and quiet conscience"



He felt a sudden pang of guilt about what was about to happen - a gut-twisting clench of worry for Harry, forced to look on. No amount of training could prepare him for this result. I worry for those left to deal with the aftermath. For Hogwarts, the Order, the chaos and pain that will follow. Yet, to the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure....and if I am not exactly well-organised, at least I recall the password to my chambers. It's sherbert lemons. No, it's acid pops. No, perhaps cockroach clusters...

Snape shouted; the light struck him in the chest and his train of thought was derailed; it wasn't so much painful as much as it felt like a very strong electrical shock, gone instantly. Falling over the parapet, he glimpsed Harry's face and tried to tell him, "Harry, my dear boy, death isn't so bad for me," but he couldn't make his lips move; he was already dead, the spirit realm beckoned him. But he wasn't ready - quite - yet.

As his body tumbled to the ground below, he gently floated up to stand near Harry and whisper in his ear, in those few seconds shock reigned. He knew Harry couldn't hear him - but he hoped, Merlin's beard how he hoped = that Harry's heart could hear him. "Don't worry about me, my boy; because I have a secret, that's just between you and me. You see, the greatest wizard of our time isn't me - it's you. You'll do just fine, Harry; you'll do just fine."

He couldn't walk long on the material plane; he was pure spirit, not ghost. His time here was done. "I must go now, boy; but remember, in your heart, I'm never truly gone. Just ask Fawkes..." He smiled once, what his enemies would call an eccentric's smile and his friends would call his blessing - and whispered, to no one in particular, "Strange, quite - but I feel within me a peace above all earthly dignities. Here, at the end of everything, I have a still and quiet conscience."

Death bowed = the slightest bend of the waist, but accolades aplenty for the second greatest wizard of their time. "I'm ready now," Dumbledore said. He fished in his pocket as Death accompanied him to the threshold. "Sherbert lemon?"

"No, thank you," Death said. "I prefer acid pops myself."
