Cold Comfort

It looked fine as silk and soft as down, but underfoot it crunched and creaked and groaned. And it was cold: blessedly, unforgivingly cold underfoot. First with the sharp, icy-hot burn of relentless cold, and then with the pure numbness of absolution.

He could imagine ice crystals forming on his skin, inch by inch, slowly absolving the sins of the fathers, the weakness of the flesh.

At some point he sat down; he couldn't remember doing so. He found a wall to lean against, and watched the snow fall; it fell like lace-work on silvery blonde hair and slowly closing eyes. Snow, like grace, like people, falling.
